Mao’s Kitchen
http://www.maoskitchen.com/
Hardwood picnic tables and colorful propaganda posters from China’s Communist Revolution mirror the character of the clientele: informal, quirky and hip. Solo diners can
grab a seat at the communal table and chat with the outgoing, attentive waitstaff. With a
menu boasting country-style food made without canned products or MSG, the kitchen will
accommodate special requests.

California Vegan
http://www.californiavegan.com/
One of LA’s first vegan restaurants, all dishes are panned from healthy ingredients. The
charming staff serve a broad menu of family recipes, and even the lunch menus come
complete with steamed rice, miso soup, and a spring roll.

Swingers
http://swingersdiner.com/
For better or for worse, Swingers has become an L.A. institution. Andy Warhol-inspired
wallpaper (cows, not cans), tartan-plaid booths and waitresses in fishnets epitomize L.A.’s
retro diner scene where vintage-clothed screenwriters hang. The elaborately illustrated menu
includes grilled cheese stuffed with sharp cheddar and avocado, milk shakes enriched with
fruit juice, and salads topped with ahi tuna.

Katsuya
http://www.sbeent.com/katsuya/
Its stunning environment created by über-designer Philippe Starck, a beautiful clientele and
inventive modern Japanese cuisine comprise a hip L.A. combination that’s hard to pass up.
The restaurant’s design is dominated by huge backlit images of a geisha’s face—a pair of sly
eyes taking in the hot scene or glossy red lips pouting from above. Guests sit on white leather
couches or at seductively illuminated sushi and robata bars.

Bossa Nova
http://www.bossafood.com/
This neighborhood eatery has won a crowd of devoted customers with its laid-back
atmosphere and consistently delicious food. Lunch is the busiest time of day. That’s when
young Hollywood insiders and incognito WB stars crowd the restaurant’s breezy patio area.
It’s all about the grilled meats and Brazilian spices here. Tender chicken breasts or snapper
filets are marinated in a citrus blend and accompanied by sweet, gooey plantains, black beans,
rice and yucca flour. These meals are true belt busters.
